Bedsore Prevention
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are open wounds that develop on the skin due to prolonged pressure. They most commonly occur on bony areas, such as the elbows, heels, and tailbone. Bedsores can be very painful and difficult to heal, and in severe cases, they can lead to serious infections.
- Regular repositioning: This is the most important thing you can do to prevent bedsores. If you are bedridden, you should be repositioned every 2 hours. If you are able to move around, you should change your position every 15-30 minutes.
- Skin care: Keep your skin clean and dry. Use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water to wash your skin, and pat it dry with a soft towel. Avoid using harsh soaps or rubbing your skin. Apply a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated
- Nutrition: Eating a healthy diet that is rich in protein and vitamins can help your skin heal and prevent bedsores. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Pressure relief: Use pressure-relieving surfaces, such as special mattresses and cushions, to help reduce pressure on your skin.
- Bowel and bladder control: If you have trouble controlling your bowels or bladder, talk to your doctor about ways to manage this. Urine and stool can irritate the skin and increase your risk of developing bedsores.
